A bird? A plane? No, it’s SY’s Superman minifig set! [SY Superman Set]

PC020374Let’s be honest, Marvel has been lording over pop culture in recent times compared to DC. That said, DC still has some iconic characters in its library, one of which is Superman. There’s legitimate buzz and curiosity, if not total excitement, over the upcoming Batman v. Superman movie, and Sheng Yuan thought it might be able to cater to cash-strapped fans by releasing a Superman-themed set.

There’s nothing new price-wise with this set. The usual 25 pesos/minifig when bought as a set still applies. Though I will say that I don’t see this set being sold that much anymore in my usual Divisoria haunts, as those retailers are sometimes quick to rotate out the sets they sell. Shoppesville retailers in Greenhills might probably still have these, if you’re so inclined, or go straight to eBay.

Included in the set are the following:

  • The Cyborg (the villain Hank Henshaw, not to be confused with DC’s other Cyborg hero character)
  • “Man of Steel” (movie) Superman
  • General Zod
  • Jor-El
  • comic-book Superman
  • Solar Suit Superman
  • Clark Kent in mid-costume change
  • Bizarro

It’s a pretty good line-up, I guess. It would’ve been nice to have a Lois Lane thrown in, but it’s fine as it is, with a mix of different Superman costumes from both the recent movie and comic book lore, as well as a couple of bad guys thrown in.

Actual figures-wise, these minifigs bear the hallmark of SY, meaning they have the unique-to-SY leg pieces, with the trapezoidal feet and the open back bottom of the leg piece. Again, not a deal-breaker for me. Each minifig also comes with a small plate, some translucent piece that I suppose are the Lego manifestation of Kryptonite/crystals, and collectible cards. There are minifig-specific accessories thrown in (sometimes totally inappropriate to the character, though), and I’ll note these when I get into specific minifigs.

The usual bootleg minifig caveats apply, meaning not-so-ideal paint job in some areas, and possibly errant packaging leading to wrong minifigs inserted in some other minifig’s box. If you can check box contents with your retailer before buying, that would be good. I prefer to surprise myself, though. Smile

Caveats included, though, I’m fine with this set. It definitely fills a gap for collectors, as long as you’re not overly picky with getting perfect minifigs.

On to the minifigs!

The whole shebang – There’s something wrong here…
PC020416 Minifig front – What? That’s not Zod.
PC020417 Yep, definitely not him. Oh well.

Jor-El

PC020421 Box art – I like that whoever did the box art never bothered to flip the image over so the S reads properly.

PC020425 Minifig front – Errant paint job on the torso piece. Probably an assembly line error, I suspect there are other Jor-Els with S logos lacking extra layers of paint.
