Decool Super Heroes Set 1 [Toy Impressions]

Here's Decool's answer to SY's Super Heroes set. If I recall correctly, these two sets came to our shores within days of each other. Fierce competition between bootleg makers, who would'a thunk it, eh? I ain't complaining, though, competition is good, the more options there are, the better.

Pricing is still at PhP 30 (USD 0.69) per minifig when bought as a set. That's a bit higher than the SY minifigs that retails for as low as PhP 25 (USD 0.57) per minifig. These are, again, Divisoria prices. If you plan to buy each separately, the prices bump up to PhP 50 (USD 1.15) per piece.
As for the set itself, it mostly parallels the SY set, at least in terms of characters included. Here's a full listing of what's included:

- Captain America (Avengers version)
- Spider-man (classic comic book)
- Hulk (the Lou Ferrigno type)
- Thor (Avengers version)
- Hawkeye (Avengers version)
- Zod (Man of Steel version)
- Batman (Michael Keaton version)
- Iron Man (Mark 42)
- Superman (Man of Steel version)

Off the bat, there's no Wolverine here. Instead, you get Hawkeye and Zod. The other two differences is that Decool's Superman is the "Man of Steel" movie version (SY has the classic comic book/Christopher Reeve version) and Decool's Iron Man is a Mark 42 (SY has the Mark 6).

Characters included aside, another key difference between the SY and Decool sets is that Decool uses the standard Lego minifig legs, so there's none of those trapezoidal feet nubs SY uses. While that's not really a deal-breaker for me, I figured it might be for some, so it bears mentioning.

Even more importantly, though, Decool's pack-in accessories are more appropriate for the characters. If you recall, SY gave guns to Batman, Spider-man, and Superman. Instead, Decool gave Batman a batarang (woohoo!), Spider-man a web rope (yes!), and nothing for Superman (slight bummer, but entirely appropriate).

What really puts the Decool minifigs over the SY versions, though is that Decool gave alternate facial expressions like Lego does. Of course, this does nothing for guys with painted-on masks like Cap and Spidey, but the rest of the crew have alternate expressions (even alternate styles in the case of Hawkeye's shades). Nice.

As for quality, there are some minor issues, usually paint issues, but nothing that stands out in a bad way. As far as I'm concerned, Decool is number one when it comes to bootleg Lego minifigs alongside SY (well, SY is a bit behind because of the questionable accessories, but only slightly).

Once again, another easy recommendation from me.

Captain America

Spider-man

Hulk

Thor

Hawkeye

General Zod

Batman

Iron Man Mark 42

Superman

  1. Hi Vinzer !

I think Decool makes very good quality. I don't own any Sheng Yuan minifigure for the moment, but I will soon receive two SY sets, so I will be able to compare qualities ! I have a JLB minifigures set, the quality is poor. I will get two Lele too, I'm wondering how the quality is !

    1. SY makes good sets. I have a huge backlog of posts to write, but I will tell you in advance that they've done away with their patented "SY feet" in later sets, and other than that, their quality is as good as Decool. If you like Decool, you'll like SY.

As for Lele, their initial offerings leave a lot to be desired, but they do get better over time. Sometimes they'd whiff on a couple of sets, but they make good quality sets nowadays that I'd be remiss to not give them a go.

I have a couple of JLBs here that I haven't opened yet, but if you say they're bad, then that would make for an interesting post down the line. Haha.

      Thanks for commenting!
