Catch Jurassic World's Owen and company on a shoestring budget [Lele's Jurassic World minifig set]

One thing about Lele is that among the big three of bootleg Lego manufacturers (Sheng Yuan and Decool are the other two; together with Lele, these three makers offer the best-made bootlegs), it tries to diversify its offerings more than the other two. Or at least, they go to market with non-superhero offerings faster than the other two.

It comes as no surprise, then, that they're first to the market (at least here in the Philippines) with a Jurassic World minifig set. As with most bootleg minifig sets, this one comes in a set of 8 minifigs.  So who made the cut?

- Owen Grady
- Gray Mitchell
- Zach Mitchell
- Simon Masrani
- Henry Wu
- Vic Hoskins
- ACU Trooper (male)
- ACU Trooper (female)

Welp, no Claire is to be found, which, in light of two ACU troopers, is a bummer. Also a bummer? The absence of ANY dinosaur in the set.

I mean, really, this is Jurassic World we're talking about. The lasting image people have of this is Pratt doing his best to control his velociraptor pack. So yeah, major bummer.

With that out of the way, though, let's take a look at what the set does offer.

As is the standard now for Lele minifigs, each comes in a box adorned with CGI art on the front and the full set of minifigs at the back (this comes in handy when double-checking minifigs sold as a set to see if you have all minifigs in it). The side panels for this one shows the assembled minifig and display up close on one, and a rehash of the CGI art on the other.

The set itself includes the minifig, a display plate along with adornments to build on top of it, and the now-ubiquitous set of character cards. If you'll notice, Lele doesn't include any build instructions with each set, so you have to rely on the side panel image to build the set as intended.

Now let's take a look at the minifigs themselves.

ACU Trooper (male)

At first glance, the trooper looks to be okay. Then you notice the skewed paint on the body armor when you look closer. Other than that, though, this is a pretty solid minifig, and Lele has even included the alternate facial expression that the official Lego minifigs include. Included is an electric prod.

ACU Trooper (female)

I'm still miffed about losing Claire in the set over this (or the other ACU trooper). Other than that, this minifig is also pretty good, and trades in the electric prod of the other trooper for a tranquilizer rifle. In keeping consistent with bootleg ACU uniforms, this lady's body armor also sports the skewed paint details of the other guy's.

Gray Mitchell

The younger of the two children who got separated from the tour group, Gray is portrayed in brick form as being as tall as adults. This is also the case in the official Lego version, though, so Lele is just sticking to the original design.

Gray's accessories are pretty curious, though. There's a chain, and there are blade-like pieces that seem to have come from a Ninjago set. I'll just assume that those are dinosaur talons. Yeah, that's it. Talons.

Zach Mitchell

And here's Gray's older brother. He also comes with those "talons". He's a solid minifig otherwise.

Simon Masrani

The chopper-flying, billionaire founder of Jurassic World appears in brick form as a guy with bro hair. The talons are in play with this guy as well.

Vic Hoskins

If I didn't bother to read the credits, I wouldn't have known that the very versatile Vincent D'Onofrio was this guy. I also wouldn't have pegged him as the same actor who portrayed the iconic Goimer Pyle in Full Metal Jacket. Amazing. His bootleg image is just as solid, and also comes with, yep, you guessed it, those talons.

Owen Grady

The lead character in the film in bootleg minifig form. There's nothing remiss with this minifig, but it would've been nice if his set included a motorcycle, but that's asking for the moon considering this one's bootleg origins and asking price. Owen here comes with a knife and those talons, gold-colored in this case. Don't ask me why.

Henry Wu

If I'm not mistaken, B.D. Wong, as Henry Wu, is the only actor from the original Jurassic Park film to appear in Jurassic World. Props to him. You might have noticed that I ended with this guy instead of lead character (and assuredly alpha male) Owen. Why? Well, Henry's bootleg minifig, by my reckoning, owns the coolest accessory in the set - the brick equivalent of the amber-preserved mosquito from the Jurassic era.

The presence of the mosquito-amber brick helps dull the loss of dinosaurs in this set (note: helps, not totally removes it). For some reason, I'm tickled pink by key story props like this. I'm equally enthused by, say, Lego Milhouse holding an issue of Radioactive Man - it just shows some good attention to detail by designers.

Anyway, that's the set. Sans the absence of Claire and dinosaurs, it's a pretty solid set, and if you're looking to add to your bootleg collection beyond the usual superhero bootlegs, this is a set worth considering. Recommended.
